About VoIP Forum
Independent, practical writing on voice over IP for Australians, from home phone lines to business phone systems.
Why this site exists
Almost every phone call in Australia now travels as data at some point. The NBN turned home landlines into VoIP services, businesses are swapping phone systems for cloud platforms and Microsoft Teams, and AI is changing how calls are answered. At the same time, the rules around emergency calling and scam prevention have tightened.
A lot of what's written about VoIP is either sales copy or written for a US audience. VoIP Forum aims to be the plain-English, Australian-focused alternative: what's changing, what your options are, and how to get good results from whatever you choose.
What we cover
- Advances in the technology: codecs and HD voice, AI voice agents, WebRTC, and where calling is heading.
- Industry and regulation: NBN and copper changes, Triple Zero, scam call rules, and what they mean in practice.
- Setup options: cloud PBX, Teams Phone, SIP trunks, mobile-first and contact centre approaches, compared honestly.
- Getting the most out of it: call quality, network configuration, remote work, and security.
Our approach
We don't rank or recommend specific providers, and we don't accept payment for coverage. Where we state facts about regulation or industry changes, we link to the sources so you can check them. Articles are general information, not advice for your particular situation. For decisions with legal, safety or significant financial consequences, talk to your provider or a qualified adviser.
